"Rules?" about marketting photos of celebrities and movie sets

Does anyone know what the rules are (written and/or unspoken) about marketting photos of celebrities, film locations, and movie sets for productions that have not been released yet? I had the rare opportunity this week as a public passerby to grab some interesting photo illustrations of filming underway on a major upcoming release. I'm sure there are many editorial outlets that would be quite interested in these photos, but I don't want to make any legal trouble for myself.

Naturally, I don't have any model releases. Is there anything I need to be careful about in marketting these photos? They were taken in a very open and public setting. Where could I research some outlets to pursue (other than tabloids)? I normally don't shoot this subject, but when opportunity knocks...

No need for model releases for editorial usage, i.e. in magazines, newspapers etc. I'd call the tabloids. If we're taking big stars, big movie production you might also want to contact an agency like Getty or Corbis to get worldwide distribution - just make sure you contract for a good chunk of the sales, 50% would be the norm.

Thanks, Mike. That was very helpful. I think I would like to pursue distribution for these photos through Getty. And actually, I'm really just starting out here. I am in the middle of reading through "How to Sell and Resell..." and was working on building up an initial photo library when this shoot dropped into my lap. I learn best by doing, and thought I might as well take advantage of that opportunity - both to start learning how to market my photos (they seem like a more or less easy sell - they are major stars, major production, filming in a famous place) and to practice breaking into the business side of things.

In my research it seems like Getty's preferred method of contact is email. How closely does all of the info in Rohn's book, which seems to place more emphasis on physical/written correspondence translate to today when things have finally moved to primarily electronic / digital? I have a million questions, of course - not wanting to make the worst beginner mistakes. But I also don't mind learning by trial and error. I'm sure most of the recommendations in Rohn's book are still applicable, and I'm relying on that as a valuable resource. But is there anything I should do differently in this case? Any info that needs to be updated for 2007?

Should I attach a couple small thumbnails to an initial email to Getty? How much should I be concerned about the timing factor (the movie is scheduled for realease at the end of 2007) - will they be more valuable if I rush to get them out there, or should I take more time and be more careful with the marketting? Should I request 50% of all sales in my initial email, describing my terms? Maybe I need to go back and re-read a couple chapters of Rohn's book smiling smiley

around the corner from where I live they're
shooting a movie. this Bozo comes over and tells this guy shooting
some photos to stop shooting. they walks away. I was hoping he say something to me
but he didn't say anything to me.I don't care how tough he think he was.
I would have told him off. then ask how he would feel about getting his butt
kick by a 63 year old man.
